Training in real time, in the real world

In this first-of-its-kind course, I coached an animal shelter tea via video chat on live BAT set-ups and other techniques for dog reactivity. The dog was adopted mid-way and our training had to be flexible to adapt. This is the archive of that course, so you'll get all videos of the sessions. 9 CPDT CEUs.

  • How to coach clients to use BAT for dog aggression, frustration, and fear, including the BAT leash skills.

  • How to choose a training location to do BAT.

  • How to choose and change the environment to promote exploration and safety.

  • How to manage training set-ups in real-time, to maximize learning and reduce arousal.

  • Shelter-specific advice for dog reactivity.

It's one thing to know the principles of BAT.

It's another to know them well enough to be able to adapt your training.

  • All Videos

This is an archived live course, made up entirely of videos. It includes the raw footage of the training sessions, as well as the video commentary I did with course students when this was a live course.

  • Adaptability is Key!

These sessions are done at a shelter, where variables are constantly changing. In these sessions, you'll see me work through the challenges of doing BAT in a shelter, with a dog of unknown history.

  • Real Life Isn't Perfect!

This course includes many different ways to help make a BAT set-up more successful. I also include the times when the session didn't go well, talk about my own mistakes, and change things in my training to improve the outcome.

A wonderful course. Able to really see body language, dissect it, and figure out ways to BAT triggers with a fairly difficult/high energy dog. Great team of trainers. Dayna really did a swell job of handling some of the tougher moments. Laura was a great coach, and Grisha - so helpful with your play by play commentary. Great to have so many eyes on Sophie.

I was very excited when I saw this course option because I've been volunteering with our county animal shelter for 5 years now and I'm always looking for ways to improve my handling skills and share that info with other volunteers at the shelter. This course was perfect for that! There is so much video covering the process from beginning to end. I definitely can relate to all the challenges that the participants faced as they worked with a dog at the shelter environment. And I appreciate knowing that Grisha and her team learned from this experience as well. I will definitely be referring back to this course often.

I thought it was useful practice for improving observations skills of the dog's body language, especially as related to thresholds and how fast a dog's arousal levels go, what coping mechanisms it looks like it wants to adopt (given the restriction of the leash). It was also useful exposure to more examples of humans learning to carry out BAT. I thought sometimes technical hitches, sound quality etc., distracted or hampered smooth delivery, but the content was useful. Thanks.

Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Author

Grisha Stewart MA, CPDT-KA, KPACTP

I'm a collaborative dog trainer, author, podcaster, international presenter, and keynote speaker based in Oregon, USA. My passion projects are grief tending, community singing, and woodturning. I enjoy developing empowering approaches to help dogs and people live in harmony.

I'm fascinated by animal behavior, somatic awareness, and psychology. I'm passionate about wholehearted living for all beings, including dogs with a history of aggression, frustration, or fear as well as puppies and my other favorite species: humans.

My Behavior Adjustment Training technique (BAT 2.0 book and the new BAT 3.0) is used worldwide to help dogs gain confidence and social skills. A conservative calculation is that well over 200,000 people have learned about BAT so far.

I have always loved teaching. I earned a Master's in mathematics and taught college courses, but I found my true calling in dog training. I have been teaching dog training and behavior since 2003. In 2010, I started traveling worldwide to teach dog trainers about BAT. In 2014 I developed BAT 2.0 and also started this online dog training and behavior school, the Grisha Stewart Academy which now has over 140 classes from my favorite emotionally intelligent dog and human behavior experts. I also co-host a podcast at The Lesson is Love.

As an outgoing introvert, I enjoy teaching at cooperative conferences and am so grateful to be able to offer classes about dogs online. I refresh my batteries by singing, expressing grief in community, and savoring life in the woods with my husband (Tom), Labrador (Joey), cat (Garbanzo aka "Adventure Kitty" and "Baby Panther"), and Little Brown Dog (Zuki).

Valuable learning opportunities

Susan Johansen BS, CPDT-KA, CTDI

"I have thoroughly enjoyed both the BAT live course and Michael Shikashio's live sessions!"

"Thank you for thinking out of the box and bringing us these valuable learning opportunities. I especially enjoyed the R+ fashion in which the actual learners were cheer leaded and encouraged to move forward and through the occasional missteps. All the dogs and humans were treated with respect and kindness and received excellent training." I am also looking forward to your new Tween course coming up this week!
